Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Variations and Tips
For a variation, add a cinnamon stick or a pinch of nutmeg while the sauce simmers for a warm, spicy flavor. If you prefer a less sweet sauce, reduce the sugar to 3/4 cup.
