Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 2-3 oranges)
- 2 teaspoons orange zest
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2-3 drops orange food coloring (optional)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for coating)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
- Start by juicing fresh oranges to yield 1/2 cup of orange juice. Strain out any pulp for a smooth candy texture.
- Grate the zest of 2-3 oranges to add a burst of citrus flavor.
Step 2: Heat the Mixture
- In a medium saucepan, combine:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 2 teaspoons orange zest
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar completely dissolves.
Step 3: Boil to Perfection
- Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring and increase the heat slightly. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan.
- Allow the mixture to boil until it reaches 250Β°F (121Β°C), also known as the firm ball stage. This ensures the candy sets properly.
- If using food coloring, add 2-3 drops of orange food coloring for a vibrant, nostalgic look. Stir gently.
Step 4: Pour and Cool
- Carefully pour the hot candy mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or into a silicone candy mold.
- Let it cool for 30-45 minutes, or until the candy is firm and set.
Step 5: Cut and Coat
- Once the candy is firm but still slightly tacky, cut it into small squares or bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife.
- Roll each candy piece in powdered sugar to keep them from sticking together and add a classic touch.
