Dust mites are tiny, invisible pests that can trigger allergies and asthma symptoms, making it essential to regularly clean your mattress. Fortunately, with the right steps, you can quickly and effectively get rid of dust mites from your mattress. Here’s how:
1. Vacuum the Mattress Thoroughly
Start by vacuuming your mattress using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, which traps allergens like dust mites. Focus on all areas of the mattress, including the seams and edges, where dust mites are likely to accumulate. Use the upholstery attachment to ensure a thorough clean.
Tip: Vacuum both sides of the mattress for a more complete dust mite removal.
2. Sprinkle Baking Soda
Baking soda is a natural cleaning agent that helps absorb moisture and neutralize odors. Dust mites thrive in humid environments, so sprinkling baking soda can help dehydrate and eliminate them.
Generously sprinkle baking soda across the entire surface of the mattress.
Let it sit for 15-30 minutes.
Vacuum the mattress again to remove the baking soda and any dead dust mites.
3. Use Essential Oils
Essential oils like tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, or lavender oil have natural antimicrobial properties that help kill dust mites. Mix 10-15 drops of any of these oils with water in a spray bottle and lightly mist your mattress. Let it air dry before putting the sheets back on.

4. Steam Clean the Mattress

5. Wash Bedding in Hot Water
To fully eliminate dust mites, wash your bed linens, pillowcases, and mattress covers in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C). Hot water kills dust mites and removes their waste, which is often the source of allergic reactions.
