How to Remove a Broken Key from a Lock

  1. The magnet

If your key is made of ferrous metal (like most conventional keys), a  strong magnet  may be enough to pull it out of the lock.  Add a little lubricant  to make it easier to extract and try to gently pull the key with the magnet.

  1. Tweezers or fine tweezers

If a piece of the key is sticking out slightly, try grabbing it with  tweezers ,  needle-nose pliers  , or even  fine-tipped scissors .  Add a little lubricant  to make it slide in more easily, and pull gently to prevent it from getting stuck further.

Broken key with the door open: a simpler solution

If the door is  open , retrieving the key piece is often  easier . Here are some handy tips:

  1. With fine-tipped scissors

Gently insert  the scissors into the lock  to  push the broken key outward . Once it starts to come out, use pliers  to  remove it completely.

  1. With another key

If the broken key is  not completely stuck , you can try inserting another key of the same model  into the lock and  gently pushing  to remove the stuck piece.
