Guide on How to Grow Ginger in Plastic Bags

Slice and Dry the Ginger

Take a sharp knife and chop the ginger into smaller pieces. Each piece should be around 1 to 2 inches long and have at least one or two small growth buds.

After that, place them in a dry and well-aired spot for approximately 24 to 48 hours. This time of drying helps the cut areas develop a protective covering.

Step 3: Put the ginger in the ground.

First, fill your plastic bags with your nutrient-rich soil mix, but make sure to leave some space at the top.

After that, place your ginger pieces in the soil, burying them about 2-4 inches deep, making sure the buds are facing upwards.

Now, put your plastic bags in a sunny window or a nice spot on your patio.

Step 4: Giving water and taking care.

Make sure to water your ginger plants often but not too much. If you are not sure, put your finger about one inch into the dirt. When the soil is dry, it’s time to water the plant.

Additionally, this plant needs to be fed regularly. Use a general liquid fertilizer once a month from spring to fall.

If you see any bugs, spraying them with soapy water can usually solve the problem.

Step 5: Gather crops.

Ginger plants typically need 8-10 months to grow fully. You will know they are ready when the leaves start to turn yellow and die.

When it’s time to collect the crops, gently dig around the plant to uncover the roots.

Use your hands to remove them from the ground. If you want your ginger plant to continue growing, leave some rhizomes in the soil for future growth.
